In June 2019 RIBA joined the global declaration of an environment and climate emergency and released a new Sustainable Outcomes Guide on 12 December 2020 to guide Architects on the DA of sustainable projects across the triple line of sustainability – environmental, social and economic value to demonstrate contemporary sustainable professionalism.

These outcomes are associated with key performance metrics, design principles with verification requirements and are classified under the one or more categories of environmental, social and economic.

Rural Studio recommends that the RIBA Plan of Use Guide is adopted to work towards outcomes of low Operational Carbon, low Embodied Carbon, Sustainable Water Cycle, Sustainable Connectivity and Transport, Sustainable Land use and Biodiversity and Good Health and Wellbeing.  With regard to Social Sustainably Rural Studio will use the RIBA Social Value Toolkit for Sustainable Life Cycle Cost and Sustainable Communities.
