Barn and Farm Building Conversions
Modern agricultural methods – in particular machinery – have meant that many traditional stone barn structures have become underutilised and left to dilapidate.
Barn and farm building conversions offer the chance to create new homes in locations where development would otherwise not be permitted. Because of their typically remote nature there is also the very practical need to make the end solution as energy efficient as possible.
We like to take the approach that the existing structure has an inherent charm and character, which the new interventions should respect and enhance. Combined with the need for energy efficiency this can involve in effect creating a new highly insulated shell within the existing structure; the original walls acting as historic cladding within which the new building sits. This can create very exciting design opportunities whereby the existing shell opens up to reveal aspects of the new home.
